How to choose the message for a personalised mug

A personalised mug sounds easy: you pick a few words and that’s it. Then you sit in front of the empty field and nothing comes. Or far too much does.

This guide is about finding the few right words for the inside of a mug: how much room you have, where they will sit, which tone fits, and how to check the message is right before it is fired into the ceramic.

Where the message sits: on the wall or on the bottom

On an EMSENSA mug, the message is inside. It sits either on the side wall, where it appears gradually as you drink, or on the bottom of the mug, where you only see it at the last sip. The position depends on the message: shorter messages suit the bottom.

The difference shapes how it is read. A message on the wall, like “Respiră… încă ești aici” (“Breathe… you’re still here”), is discovered slowly, line by line. One on the bottom, like “Ești bine?” (“Are you okay?”) or “Ce liniște…” (“Such stillness…”), is a surprise at the end: two words, read at a glance.

How long it can be

The message inside is made on ceramic, so it has clear limits:

  • two lines at most;
  • no more than four words per line;
  • 56 characters at most in total.

On the page for the mug with your own message, the message field counts the words on each line, so you can see straight away whether it fits. The limits aren’t an obstacle. The collection messages have between two and six words, and that’s exactly why they can be read easily, at a glance, while you drink.

Choose the tone before the words

Before you look for the wording, ask yourself what you want the person to feel when they read it. A few tones that work well inside a mug:

  • Calming: an invitation to pause, like “E seară… lasă totul” (“It’s evening… let it all go”).
  • Caring: a question that shows you care, like “Ai grijă de tine?” (“Are you taking care of yourself?”).
  • Intimate: something only the two of you understand, a word or a nickname.
  • Encouraging: a line about patience, not performance.
  • Playful: a private joke, if you’re sure it will be taken kindly.

One tone per mug. A message that tries to be funny, deep and romantic all at once, in a handful of words, doesn’t reach anyone.

A few rules that help

  1. Write for one person. A message that could suit anyone won’t be felt by anyone.
  2. Read it aloud. If it sounds like a slogan, rewrite it as something you’d say face to face.
  3. Think of the hundredth morning. The message will be read many times. What’s funny once can wear thin; what’s gentle lasts.
  4. Avoid dates and occasions. “Happy birthday 2026” dates quickly; “you are home” doesn’t.
  5. Use ellipses with purpose. In the EMSENSA collection, “…” marks a pause for breath, as in “Ridică privirea…” (“Look up…”).
  6. Check the spelling and, in Romanian, the diacritics. The team reads the message before making it, but it’s worth checking yourself: the words stay on the mug.

From idea to message: a few examples

The best messages start as a long sentence and end up as a few words. Below, the slash “/” shows where the message moves to the second line:

  • “I want her to know I think of her every morning, even though we’re far apart” becomes “close, / even far away”.
  • “I want to remind her not to be so hard on herself” becomes “be gentle / with yourself”.
  • “Thank you for being there in this hard year” becomes “you were there. / thank you.”.
  • The example in the field on our site, “ești iubită, / mereu” (“you are loved, / always”), shows how little is needed.

The AI helper on the product page

If you get stuck, the “Create it with AI” button appears on the page of the personalisable mug whenever the EMSENSA assistant is switched on. You tell it who the mug is for, what you want them to feel and, if you like, the occasion and the language of the message. It suggests a few options that already fit the limits: two lines, no more than four words per line.

The suggestions are only a starting point. Pick one, change it as you like, or write another from scratch. The final message is yours, and the team reads it before making the piece. If you’d rather talk to a person, write to us: if you’d like, we’ll find the right wording together.

The language of the message

The collection messages are in Romanian, plus two in English: “Breathe… you’re still here” and “It’s evening… let it all go”. For a personalised mug you can also ask for a message in English, for example for a gift sent to someone abroad.

The message in the mug and the message on the card

Don’t try to fit everything inside the mug. Whatever doesn’t fit can go on the card: the gift note can be up to 200 characters and travels with the mug. The message in the mug is the thought that stays. The card is the place for context, wishes and your signature.

What to know before you order

  • The mug with your own message costs 185 RON, like every mug in the collection, and holds 300 ml.
  • It is made to order and ships within 2–4 weeks.
  • A personalised piece cannot be returned, but if it arrives damaged we replace it free of charge.
  • Within Romania, delivery takes 1–3 working days and costs 19 RON, free over 200 RON. To the other EU countries, the shipping cost is shown at checkout, depending on the country. The details are on the Delivery & returns page.
