Handmade Christmas gifts with a message

Christmas is when we buy the most gifts and, often, the most rushed ones. A handmade object, with a message chosen for one particular person, slows that pace down a little: you choose it thinking of someone, not of a list.

This guide helps you choose a mug with a message for Christmas, find the right words and, above all, order in time, so the gift is under the tree and not still on its way.

Why a handmade Christmas gift

A handmade object carries the traces of the person who made it. Every EMSENSA mug is thrown on the potter’s wheel in Romania, in ceramic stoneware, then given a matte glaze and fired at 1,200°C. The message inside is applied as a ceramic decal and fixed with a second firing. That’s why no two mugs are identical: small variations in shape and glaze make each one unique.

There is another, simpler reason: a mug gets used. After the holidays, many gifts end up in a cupboard. A good mug ends up on the table every morning, and its message comes back every time the coffee runs out.

Ideas for everyone on your list

A mug doesn’t need a “Christmas” message to be a Christmas gift. Think about the person receiving it and the year they’ve had. The messages are in Romanian, with the translation in brackets:

• For your mum or grandmother: “Ai grijă de tine?” (“Are you taking care of yourself?”), for the woman who has looked after everyone.
• For your dad, or someone who doesn’t say much: “Ești bine?” (“Are you okay?”), the simple question on the bottom of the mug that opens a conversation.
• For your partner: “E seară… lasă totul” (“It’s evening… let it all go”), for winter evenings with tea after long days.
• For a friend who has had a hard year: “Respiră… încă ești aici” (“Breathe… you’re still here”).
• For someone who always puts tomorrow before today: “Mai ai o zi… nu o grăbi” (“You have one more day… don’t rush it”).
• For someone who would rather read it in English: “Breathe… you’re still here” or “It’s evening… let it all go”, the two mugs with English messages.
• For colleagues: “Ridică privirea…” (“Look up…”), a good nudge for the office days before the holidays.

What to write, if you want a personalised message

Christmas pushes us towards general messages: “Happy holidays”, “Merry Christmas”. On a mug used all year, a festive message already feels dated by February. A thought about the person lasts better.

A few directions that work on a mug with your own message:

• a wish for the year ahead, without a date: “a gentler year”;
• something you often tell them: “you are home”;
• a shared memory, in two or three words;
• a question: “how are you, really?”.

Inside the mug there is room for two lines at most, with no more than four words per line, so 56 characters at most. The Christmas greeting itself belongs on the card: the gift note can be up to 200 characters. A personalised message can be in Romanian or in English. When to order so it arrives in time

This is the most important part. Lead times differ between collection mugs and personalised ones:

• A collection mug ships within 1–2 working days of order confirmation.
• Within Romania, courier transit takes 1–3 working days.
• To the other European Union countries, transit usually takes 3–9 working days, depending on the country.
• A mug with a personalised message is made to order and ships within 2–4 weeks. The team reads the message before making it.

The maths is simple. A personalised mug sent within Romania needs up to four weeks of making, plus a few days of transit. So order it at least five weeks before the day you want to give it. For another EU country, add one more week.

With collection mugs you have more time, but don’t leave it to the last few days. The lead times above are in working days, so weekends and public holidays don’t count. And in December couriers are usually busier than during the rest of the year.

How the gift arrives

You can send the mug straight to the person receiving it, at their address. On the product page you add a gift note for the card, and the mug leaves carefully packed, ready to give.

Within Romania, delivery costs 19 RON and is free for orders over 200 RON, which means from two mugs upwards. If you’re buying for several people in the same household, it’s worth ordering together.
