Gifts with a message: ideas for every moment

A gift with a message doesn’t have to be big. It just has to say something true about the person receiving it, or about what you feel for them. A mug used every morning carries that thought further than a card read once and tucked away in a drawer.

Below you’ll find ideas for the moments when people most often look for a meaningful gift: birthdays, thank-yous, friendship, couples, colleagues and the days with no reason at all. Why the message matters more than the object

Many gifts are chosen by price or by whatever is to hand. The ones that stay are chosen with the person in mind. The right message turns an ordinary object into something that is “theirs”: they recognise it, they use it, they remember you.

On an EMSENSA mug, the message sits inside, on the side wall or on the bottom. On the outside there is only the “S” symbol, pressed into the clay. The words appear little by little as the coffee or tea goes down. It’s a quiet gift: it doesn’t shout from the shelf, it finds the person drinking from it, in their own pause.

The messages are in Romanian, because that is how they are made on the ceramic. Below, each one comes with its translation in brackets, and two mugs in the collection carry messages in English.

Birthdays: a thought for the year ahead

For a birthday, it’s tempting to pick something funny or something “useful”. A message that stays with the person all year does both: the mug gets used every day, and the message reminds them that someone thought of them.

• “E dimineață… și asta e suficient” (“It’s morning… and that’s enough”), for someone who always puts pressure on themselves and forgets to enjoy the start of the day.
• “Mai ai o zi… nu o grăbi” (“You have one more day… don’t rush it”), for someone who rushes from one task to the next.
• “Ridică privirea…” (“Look up…”), for someone who needs to see again what is beautiful around them.

If you want something that is theirs alone, a mug with your own message can carry a nickname, a private joke or a phrase you often say to them. Thank-yous: for the people who were there

A “thank you” said with an object lands differently from one sent by text. It suits a teacher, the family doctor, the neighbour who watered your plants all summer, or someone who helped you through a hard time.

Messages that turn the care back towards the other person work well here. “Ai grijă de tine?” (“Are you taking care of yourself?”) is right for people who look after everyone else. And if you want to say exactly what you’re grateful for, write it in the gift note on the card: it can be up to 200 characters and travels with the mug.

Friendship: messages that open a conversation

Between friends, the best messages are questions. “Ești bine?” (“Are you okay?”) sits on the bottom of the mug: two words you only read at the last sip. It’s the question we ask too rarely. For a friend who lives far away, the mug can be your way of asking it every day.

For a friend starting something new, a job, a move or a life after a break-up, a message about being patient with yourself fits better than one about success.

Couples: something just for the two of you

For a partner, the collection messages can say a lot. “E seară… lasă totul” (“It’s evening… let it all go”) is for the evening tea you share, “E dimineață… și asta e suficient” for your slow mornings. Two different mugs, one each, can become a small ritual.

This is where personalisation makes the most sense. A short message written by you can be a line from your first conversation, a word only the two of you use, or a small promise. Inside the mug there is room for two lines at most, with no more than four words per line. Whatever doesn’t fit can go on the card.

Colleagues and teams

For a colleague who is leaving, for someone who saw a hard project through, or for a whole team, a mug is a neutral gift without being impersonal. A message like “Ridică privirea…” or “Respiră… încă ești aici” (“Breathe… you’re still here”) reads well even on a busy desk.

The most unexpected gifts are the ones with no reason. A mug sent to a friend on an ordinary Tuesday says “I was thinking of you” without needing anything else. “Ce liniște…” (“Such stillness…”), on the bottom of the mug, is a good gift for someone who barely finds time for a break.

And sometimes the best person to give to is you. You don’t need an occasion to buy yourself a mug that reminds you, in the morning, to breathe.

A few practical things

• Every mug in the collection costs 185 RON, holds 300 ml and is dishwasher safe. The price is final.
• Collection mugs ship within 1–2 working days of order confirmation. Mugs with a personalised message are made to order and ship within 2–4 weeks.
• In Romania, transit takes 1–3 working days, and delivery costs 19 RON, free for orders over 200 RON, which means from two mugs upwards. To the other European Union countries, the shipping cost is shown at checkout, depending on the country.
• You can send the mug straight to the person receiving it: add a gift note for the card, and the mug leaves carefully packed, ready to give.
